2: The @ Symbol Became Popular Because of Email

Welcome back to Fun Facts with DJ Sims, where our Trailhead bear shares quick and interesting facts from the world around us—print, communication, and everything in between.

Here’s this week’s fun fact:

The @ symbol has actually been around for hundreds of years. It was originally used in accounting and trade to mean “at a rate of” (for example, 5 items @ $2 each). But for most of its history, it wasn’t something people used in everyday writing.

That changed in 1971, when email was first being developed. The @ symbol was chosen to separate a user’s name from their computer or domain—creating the format we all recognize today.

Suddenly, a rarely used symbol became one of the most important characters in modern communication.

It’s a great reminder of how small details—whether in printing or technology—can end up playing a big role in how we connect and share information.

🐻 DJ Sims Says: Not bad for a symbol that used to just live on invoices.

Stay tuned for more Fun Facts with DJ Sims, where we’ll keep sharing little bits of knowledge from the worlds of print, design, and communication.
